April 20, 2006 -- Lincoln Savings Bank/LSB Financial to Provide
$15,000 Gift for the Iowa State University Northeast Iowa
Research and Demonstration Farm at Nashua
Lincoln Savings Bank/LSB Financial recently donated $3,000
to the Northeast Iowa Agricultural Experimental Association.
The $3,000 check is the first installment of an overall $15,000
gift to be given out over 5 years. The donation will go to
the Northeast Iowa Agricultural Experimental Association’s
Borlaug Learning Center Campaign. The campaign is being led
by the Northeast Iowa Agricultural Experimental Association,
which owns the Iowa State University Northeast Iowa Research
and Demonstration Farm at Nashua.
The Borlaug Learning Center would honor Norman Borlaug, who
was raised on a farm near Cresco. He is known as the father
of the “Green Revolution” and received the Nobel Peace Prize
in 1970 for his work to improve agricultural production in
countries faced with famine.
Kay Connelly, fundraising committee chair and a former Iowa
State University Extension crop production specialist, said
Borlaug’s legacy of service, education and innovative research
is the reason the center is being named in his honor. “This
is an opportunity to strengthen our partnership with northeast
Iowa and share applied knowledge and research, while honoring
Dr. Borlaug,” he said.
The new center will create a state-of-the-art learning environment
for educational programs for area farmers and agribusinesses,
the experimental association, Iowa State University Extension
and many community groups and youth organizations such as
4-H and FFA.
The new facility will feature meeting and conference rooms
equipped with the latest technology. There will be on-site
lab space to perform water quality research. Area extension
staff will be housed in the learning center to enhance links
between extension, research and service.
The association established the farm in 1976. Organizers
of the fundraising campaign say the new building will help
ensure the research and demonstration farm continues to provide
cutting edge, site-specific agricultural research and education,
keeping northeast Iowa agriculture competitive.
