Cost Effective Valentine's Day Gift Ideas

posted 2/12/2015 in General

After the holidays, it’s easy to be “gifted out.” Working up the strength to think about Valentine’s Day gift ideas, let alone venturing out and getting them is tough. But it’s Valentine’s Day, and you want to do something nice for your significant other. So why not do something that is both meaningful and cost effective?

First, here are a few things you should probably steer clear from. They’re either overdone or overpriced.

What not to do

  • Overpay for roses- Valentine’s Day roses are not only cliché, but retailers increase the cost at Valentine’s Day, sometimes 2 or 3 times the normal price.

  • Go with the heart-shaped box of chocolates- also a cliché. We understand tradition and someone who loves chocolates, but maybe it’s time to shake things up!

  • A teddy bear holding a heart- while this may seem like a sweet gift in the moment, it probably will end up being a dust collector on the shelf or in the closet.

Try these Valentine’s Day Ideas

These ideas will not only take you outside of the routine of the usual gifts, but they’ll also have a lighter effect on your budget and may even spawn new traditions.

  1. Help them fulfill a passion- what do they love to do, or what are their hobbies? For meaningful gifts, this is a great place to start.

  2. Think about your experiences together- if you have a favorite date, trip or other memory, see if you can recreate it or parts of it.  Framed photos that capture a meaningful moment will hold a treasured place on the shelf.

  3. Spend time doing something they love- with as busy as life gets, sometimes one-on-one time is good enough. Spend it watching their favorite movie or doing something they enjoy.

  4. Make your own fancy dinner- this is a great option for those who love cooking. Pick out one of their favorite dishes and prepare it for them at home so you can skip the reservation rush.

  5. Go old school: create a mix tape (CD)- burn a CD of your loved one’s favorite songs or songs that are meaningful to you as a couple. We’ll bet they’ll never throw it away.

What’s the most creative idea you can think of? Whatever you come up with, we hope Valentine’s Day is an enjoyable day for you and your loved one.
