5 Things to do After Closing on Your Home
Congratulations! If you just purchased a home, you have officially completed one of the biggest purchases you’ll make in your lifetime – give yourself a pat on the back!
Now that you have become a home owner, there a few more things you may want to check off on your to-do list. While these actions may not be monumental to your transition to your new abode, these simple steps will ensure the transition is a as smooth as it can be!
- Add your monthly bills to your automatic payments schedule in your online banking.
This simple step can save you hours of personal finance work each and every month. By scheduling your bills to be paid ahead of time, you can ensure each utility or service vendor is getting paid on-time while staying in budget. This also ensures that any old utility payments can be removed from your automated payments list during this update as well.
- Change the Locks.
While its nice to think that the home owners forfeited any and all keys they had, occasionally there may be a friend or relative that still has access to the home. To avoid any unexpected visitors, it’s best to hire a locksmith to come and change the locks on all exterior doors before you move into the home.
- Deep clean before moving any furniture in.
Prior to hauling your furniture, boxes, and groceries in the door, be sure the home is as clean as you would like before making the day-long effort of moving. Its much easier to clean an empty space than an area filled to the brim with belongings. This also gives you ample time to learn the space and determine the layouts you’d prefer for each room.
- Update your personal ID’s and voter registration.
You have a brand new address! Now it’s time to make it official as far as the government is concerned. Stop by your local court house to update your license or other personal identification with your new address. While you’re there, it’s also important to add your new address to your voter’s registration to determine where you’ll go to vote for local and national elections.
- Go meet your neighbors.
Whether your neighbors are next door, or a quarter mile away, it’s important to know those around you. Thank those who pop by to welcome you to the community and reach out to connect to others who may live near your new home. You can never have too many friends, and neighbors are often willing to lend a hand when it comes to watching pets, organizing play dates, and borrowing a cup of sugar.
